    Commentary
Date ca. 420 BCE (Canellopoulos); 450 to 400 BCE (BAPD); 430 to 420 BCE (Digital LIMC). Identification of scene (two figures on left are Idas and Lynceus on basis of inscription 'Lyk-'): Α. Choremi-Spetsieri and Α. Zarkadas (eds), Τhe Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum: Ancient Art (Athens, 2006) p. 136-139; extra information (CAVI (quoted in BAPD) interpret the woman holding the child as a nurse rather than Cleopatra. NB. The child is typically identified as Parthenopaios, whom Hyginus (Fab. 70, 270) and Schol. Stat. Theb. 4.309 say was son of Meleager and Atalante. But since these sources are much later than this vase, we identify the child rather as 'Son of Meleagros and Cleopatra'): Greta Hawes. Accession date (donated to Greek state in 1972).
